Our Seasonal Tree & Shrub Program

Early Spring: Horticultural Oil

Horticultural oil is applied to control scale and the overwintering stage of many insects. The oil’s surfactant action gives your plants an early start on effective insect control.

Spring: Root Fertilization

A balanced blend of fertilizers is injected into the root zone, giving plants a wake-up from winter and a nutrient boost for top growth and overall health, with enough nutrients to last through the growing season.

Late Spring: Insect & Disease Treatment

We treat plant foliage to control insects such as the Japanese beetle, pine sawfly, tent caterpillar, cankerworm, aphids, scale, mites, leaf miners, leaf beetles and sod webworm. Diseases controlled include anthracnose, rust, apple scab, leaf spot and powdery mildew.

Summer: Insect & Disease Treatment

A second application targets difficult diseases and continues the fight against insects. It also protects foliage from new insects and diseases that become active as the weather changes.

Late Summer to Early Fall: Insect & Disease Control

A spray application combats persistent diseases and late-season insects such as fall webworms, bagworms and mites.

Fall: Root Zone Fertilization

Another balanced blend of fertilizers goes into the root zone to encourage root growth and winter food storage, so plants come back healthier in spring.

Why a Plan Beats Spot Treatments

Many tree and shrub insects are easiest to control at a specific life stage. Scale and overwintering insects are most vulnerable in early spring, leaf-feeding insects in late spring and summer, and bagworms while they’re small. Ohio’s humid summers give insects and leaf diseases time to build up, and its cold winters make fall root feeding important, so a seasonal plan puts each treatment where it does the most good and catches problems early.

Signs Your Trees or Shrubs Need Help

  • Leaves with holes, chewed edges or a lacy, skeletonized look.
  • Spots, powdery coating or early leaf drop.
  • Small, bag-like cocoons hanging from evergreens.
  • Sticky residue or black, sooty coating on leaves.
  • Thin, pale or slow new growth.
