Lawn Aeration in Dayton, Cincinnati & Celina, OH
Aeration is one of the most important pieces of a healthy, flourishing lawn, and it’s often the one homeowners skip. Compacted soil is extremely common in Ohio, where so much of the ground is clay-heavy and years of foot traffic, mowing and freeze-thaw cycles press it tighter. When the soil gets tight, water runs off, fertilizer can’t reach the roots and grass gets thin. Hometown Turf provides core aeration from our Tipp City and Dayton, Cincinnati and Celina locations. What Core Aeration Does
Core aeration pulls small plugs of soil out of the lawn and opens channels so oxygen, water and nutrients can get down to the root zone. That relieves compaction, gives roots room to spread and helps break down thatch, the layer of dead grass and debris that builds up on the soil surface. A lawn with a stronger root system holds up better through summer heat and winter cold, and recovers faster in spring.
Signs Your Lawn Needs Aeration
- Water pools or runs off instead of soaking in.
- The ground feels hard when you walk across it.
- Bare or thinning patches, especially along paths, play areas and where pets run.
- A thick, spongy thatch layer on top of the soil.
- Fertilizer doesn’t seem to help as much as it should.
When to Aerate in Ohio
Timing matters. Cool-season Ohio lawns respond best to aeration in fall, when the grass is putting its energy into roots, and spring can work too. By summer, aeration should already be done; aerating in the hot, dry summer months is usually not recommended. Fall aeration also prepares your lawn for winter: improved moisture and nutrient uptake helps roots stay healthy through frost and snow. Aeration and Overseeding
Aeration is also the ideal setup for overseeding. Seed that lands in the open holes makes good contact with the soil, which helps fill in thin patches and build the thick turf you want. Ask about combining the two when you request your quote.
Aeration as Part of Your Lawn Program
Aeration works best alongside a consistent feeding plan. When the soil is open, the nutrients from our seasonal fertilization and weed control treatments reach the roots more easily.

Preparing Your Lawn for Aeration
- Mark sprinkler heads, shallow irrigation lines, invisible pet fences and other hidden objects in the yard.
- Mow a day or two before your visit.
- If the ground is very dry, water lightly the day before so the soil is easier to work.
- Leave the small soil plugs on the lawn. They break down and return nutrients to the soil.
