Why Ohio Lawns Need a Seasonal Plan

Most Ohio lawns are cool-season grasses such as Kentucky bluegrass, tall fescue and perennial ryegrass. They grow hardest in spring and fall, slow down in summer heat, and go dormant in winter. Much of the region also has heavy, clay-rich soil that compacts easily. A single bag of fertilizer once a year can’t keep up with that. A program that feeds the lawn through the seasons and handles weeds before they take over can. Every yard is different, from shaded lots to sunny new-construction lawns, so we build the plan around your grass, soil and problem areas.

What Our Lawn Treatment Program Includes

Early Spring

As temperatures rise and grass starts to grow, your lawn is hungry for food and water. Our early spring treatment provides the nutrients that get it off to a strong start after an Ohio winter.

Late Spring

We follow up with another treatment so the grass keeps growing green and hardy, and so weeds don’t take root. By late spring you should be mowing about once a week, and there shouldn’t be a weed in sight.

Early Summer

Summer puts lawns under real stress. Additional nutrients help keep grass green and weeds under control. Grub control is applied with the early summer treatment.

Late Summer

We keep the lawn fed through the heat. Mid-summer dry spells aren’t a good time to treat weeds, so the goal is to have them under control before then. If the weather is unusually dry, follow summer treatments with regular watering.

Fall

Fall care helps turf recover from summer heat and traffic and survive low winter temperatures. Fall nutrients are different from spring nutrients: they toughen the grass for the cold. Fall is also a good time for lawn aeration.

Winter

A winter treatment helps your grass rebuild from the stress of summer and come back stronger in spring.

Weeds We Target

Crabgrass, dandelions, clover, plantain, ground ivy (creeping Charlie), nutsedge, henbit and chickweed are some of the most common weeds in Ohio lawns. Our program combines pre-emergent protection in spring, which stops many weed seeds such as crabgrass from sprouting, with treatments for broadleaf weeds that are already growing. Healthy, well-fed turf is the best long-term defense, because thick grass leaves less room for weeds. We offer organic-based solutions; ask about the options when you request your quote. Read more in our post on pre-emergent herbicides.

Tips Between Visits

  • Mow regularly and avoid cutting too short, especially in summer.
  • Water during dry spells, particularly after summer treatments.
  • Rake leaves in fall. Leaves covering the grass block light, and your lawn can suffer before winter. If you prefer, mulch them and reuse them in garden beds.
